Fortunately there is treatment for Depression, unfortunately there isn’t one set formula which is applicable for all of those who suffer from depression.  The path for recover from depression varies for each individual. Treatments for Depression are available with experienced professional psychologists.

First of all, we need to know what is depression? In a layman’s terms, depression is a strong feeling of helplessness, due to which a person is not able to function normally at home or at work. Technically speaking depression is when a person feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, angry, ashamed or restless. They may lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details or making decisions, experience relationship difficulties and may contemplate, attempt or commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, aches, pains, digestive problems or reduced energy may also be present.

As a result, the treatment for Depression can be broadly classified into two types i.e. Medical treatments or psychological treatments.

Medical Treatments:

In my opinion medical treatments which primarily are anti depression pills and tablets should be a last resort for the patient, and only after all psychological treatment options have been exhausted. As a result, anti depressant medications alter the chemical balance of the body, and have known side effects.  Consequently, these should be administered under the guidance of a qualified and experienced psychiatrist and should always be coupled counseling by a an experienced psychologist.

Psychological Treatments:

Talk therapy help you change your mind and thinking processes to re-calibrate your ability to deal with the problems and concerns of day to day life. These Psychological treatments will help your recognize those thoughts and actions which are detrimental to your well-being and to remove them from your life.

The key Psychological Treatments are as follows:

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT):

CBT effectively shifts your mind away from negative and un-helping thinking toward a positive, realistic, problem-solving mindset.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT):

When people are facing depression due to problems in relationships. Thus, IPT equips the patient on identifying and resolving those problems in relationships which lead to depression.

Behavior therapy:

It Helps in modifying behaviour to focus on activities that are rewarding, pleasant and satisfying. Thus, steering away from the behaviour that was causing depression.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT):

MBCT is a psychological therapy which involves mindfulness meditation. Thus, the patient is taught to use meditation as a form of relaxation and a tool for moving away from those trigger points that lead to depression.

In conclusion, an experienced psychologist will transparently use some or all of these Psychological Therapies to help their patients on the road to recovery.

Prayers For Happiness

When I think of a group prayer the first image that comes to my mind is of Muslim men kneeling with their foreheads touching the ground. Prayers need not be in a group they can be your one-on-one conversation with God. A prayer need not be done in a temple or church, but can be done anywhere, such as in a car, on the bus, or when an airplane is taking off or even waiting outside the doctor’s office.

Praying in Gratitude

Frequently people pray to ask God for favors, please help me find my keys, a good job and a house, a life partner, or a clean chit from the doctor. Every one of us has indulged in asking God, but if a thought to consider is how frequently have you prayed to God to thank him for what you have or what you have received? You pray hoping to get that great job at a much higher salary, but how frequently do you thank God when you get that job? Did you get that job from Divine intervention or do you keep the full credit with yourself?

Frequently a prayer is a dialog with God, your conversation with Him, similar to a conversation you would have with a friend, sharing your concerns, unburdening your load, and having a chat with him as if he was your buddy.

Prayers: Food for the Soul

In 2008 Robbins, Francis, and Edwards did a research on 131 college students in Wales (UK). The research was on the correlation between prayer frequency and happiness. The conclusion of their study was “The data demonstrated an apparent simple correlation between prayer and happiness. At face value, this finding is consistent with the view that prayer promotes a more positive attitude toward life. It enhances personal happiness. “In another word, someone who prays regularly is happier than someone who pray’s infrequently or not at all.

There is an important question on the frequency of prayers. A well-known fact is that prayer is as important for the soul as food is for the body. How much or how frequently you eat is best known to you both underfeeding and overfeeding of food is unhealthy as is prayer.

Prayers and Spiritual Awakening

As a guest at a Christian family’s house, I felt spiritually awakened when the family invited me to join them in blessing the meal and thanking God for his abundance. Many years later, I infrequently eat without a prayer. My personal adaptation of a Catholic prayer is “Bless us God, and these gifts, which we are about to receive, from your bounty through you, my God. Amen.”

To be truly happy, you need to forgive yourself. Hence, A person who doesn’t forgive themselves continues to live in the past. (It is important to Forgive yourself)

“Forgive yourself for your faults and your mistakes and move on.”

According to Deepak Chopra, a person has 70,000 thoughts a day, if this is true; does it make sense for a significant amount of these thoughts be thoughts of the past, thoughts where you are unhappy with yourself? It is critical that you unburden yourself of this negativity and to move on.

It is easier said than done, I will teach you a few simple techniques to forgive yourself. First of all, you need to:

Accept that you aren’t perfect: and that you make mistakes, but you are on a journey to self-improvement.

Remember you are not a bad person:  because you may have made a judgment of error and did something wrong, (cheated on a spouse, hit a child, spread a rumor about someone).See how you can seek forgiveness from that person, and how you can forgive yourself in the process

Talk to some, if it is about alcohol consider joining AA, talk to a friend, talk to an elder, talk to a therapist, frequently a third party opinion helps bring balance and therefore forgiveness

Forgiving yourself - Counseling with Dr Prerna Kohli, India's Leading Psychologist

Talk to yourself, dispassionately, some refer to this as talking to your internal voice

Write down on a piece of paper what you need to forgive yourself. Symbolically burn this paper and along with it forgive yourself.

Hence, in my case, I rip this sheet into very tiny pieces and throw them out of the car window and see the confetti blow away in the rearview mirror, (needless to say, do this safely and don’t get caught for littering!!!). Thus, I appreciate the distance the speeding car makes, between myself and the mistakes that I need to forgive myself for.

Forgiveness Counseling allows one to live happier

The book “A course in Miracles” devotes an entire lesson on forgiveness.  A Course in Miracles is one of the finest, if not the finest book on spirituality in recent times from the Western world. Forgiveness is the key to happiness. Forgiveness has been over the centuries considered to be a spiritual concept, taught in all the holy books, whether the Bible, the Bhagwad Gita or the Holy Qur’n.

In the Bible, it is said

“if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Forgiveness Counseling - Dr Prerna Kohli, India's Leading Psychologist
Forgiveness Counseling – Dr Prerna Kohli, India’s Leading Psychologist

In the Bhagwad Gita Vidura said:

Forgiveness is a virtue of the weak, and an ornament of the strong“, he continues on to say “Turn your attention to forgiveness, sincerity, kindness, simplicity, truth” to attain happiness.

In the Holy Qur’n it is said

whosoever forgives and makes amends, his reward is Allah” ( Qur’an 42:40). If you pardon [their faults], and forbear, and forgive- then, behold, Allah is Forgiving, [and] Merciful. Qur’an 64:14.

Today Forgiveness is considered to be a psychological concept. Forgiveness is “not condoning, excusing or forgetting what happened,” rather it is the decrease or elimination of “resentment or anger toward an offender,”  which is replaced  by “more positive feelings, thoughts, and behaviors” (Journal of Counseling and Development, 2008:  Validating the Developmental Pathway of Forgiveness by Jeanette Knutson, Robert Enright, and Benjamin Garbers.)

Forgiveness is about self-interest because not forgiving is like consuming poison so that the other person suffers. Thus, forgiveness is about releasing your mind and emotions. The unforgiving mind is stuck in despair, hence for your own mental health and well-being, you need to forgive. Hence, to achieve happiness you need to forgive. To hold resentment is to allow someone else to live in your mind for free, to release this resentment you need to forgive.

Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California, Riverside calls forgiveness “a shift in thinking” toward someone who has wronged you, “such that your desire to harm that person has decreased and your desire to do him good (or to benefit your relationship) has increased. Forgiveness, at a minimum, is a decision to let go of the desire for revenge and ill-will toward the person who wronged you.”

How do you decide if someone needs to be forgiven? The litmus test is, if you have a desire to seek revenge from some for the harm that they have done to you, then you need to forgive them.

Forgiveness Counseling - Dr Prerna Kohli, India's Leading Psychologist
Forgiveness Counseling – Dr. Prerna Kohli, India’s Leading Psychologist

One of the simplest techniques that I experienced to forgive some is to write down in detail the resentment that is within me for this person. Thus, a meditative and restful (non-agitated) mind say aloud that you forgive this person for how they have harmed you. Now, symbolically tear this paper into small shreds and throw them away, or alternatively (in a safe way) take a matchstick to these papers and chant “I forgive you for these sins” as the paper burns. Thus, forgiving the sinner will release your mind from these resentments.

In conclusion, forgiveness is not about forgetting. But, about replacing negative thoughts and emotions with positive ones. Thus, people who don’t learn to forgive others become resentful, hateful and hostile. Hence, they spend their time in plotting how to seek revenge.

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. ” -Buddha

7 SPIRITUAL LESSONS FROM THE CURRENCY DEMONETIZATION IN INDIA
Spirituality of Money - Dr Prerna Kohli India's Leading Psychologist
Spirituality of Money – Dr Prerna Kohli India’s Leading Psychologist

Change is Sudden
Everybody is concerned about the overnight action making high value currency invalid across India. Nobody saw it coming; or was prepared; or had even any idea of its happening.

But there is something else which we know will surely come, but are not sure when, where and how –  that is death. And it will come even more stealthily than this!

We had 4 hours advance notice for this – but  in death, there will not be 4 seconds. Are we prepared for the secrecy and suddenness in Death?

Spirituality of Money - Dr Prerna Kohli India's Leading Psychologist
Spirituality of Money – Dr Prerna Kohli India’s Leading Psychologist

Value can be Lost in a Second
We had Lakhs of Rupees in 500 and 1,000 denomination yesterday – but today they are just pieces of paper!

Similarly,  all wordly gains –  money,  wealth,  fame,  power –  not just high currency –  will all be worthless for us a second after death.

Don’t Bank upon Banks
Like the ATMs and Banks are closed today,  options to do good deeds will close with death. No further good deeds can be done / notes withdrawn by us directly.

We can enjoy the assets we purchased earlier with the 500 / 1,000 currency but can’t purchase any new ones now. Similarly, only the lasting assets of good deeds we created will benefit us after death –  no new goodness can then be done.

Spirituality of Money - Dr Prerna Kohli India's Leading Psychologist explian currency demonetisation
Spirituality of Money – Dr Prerna Kohli India’s Leading Psychologist

Fakes Will Not Last
One of the purposes of the action is to deal with fake currency. After this, all fake notes will be out of the system. So will it be with ourselves and our actions…

Let us test ourselves – do we have authentic notes or fakes ones –  of success, relations, happiness, even good deeds? Is our life itself authentic or are we living a fake life in a fake world?

Dr Prerna Kohli India's Leading Psychologist explain currency demonetisation
Spirituality of Money – Dr Prerna Kohli India’s Leading Psychologist

Small is Big
Big deeds run the risk of breeding pride and arrogance. The real gems are the small,  quiet, hidden, good deeds that are done with sincerity when no one is looking.

The person with two 100 rupee notes is today richer that the a person with a thousand 500 rupee notes!

Source Matters
For each of your actions, you shall be questioned and your source / intention seen.

When you go to the Bank to exchange the Rs 500 / 1,000 note, you will be asked for identity / PAN / source of Income.

Similarly when you bring your deeds to the Creator, he will ask for your source / intentions / purpose. Did you do it to be called a generous person? Or to compete with someone? Or only for the will and happiness of God?

Only the last will be valid currency there!

Plan Ahead
A lot of people are busy worrying and planning what they can do with the invalidated currency now. But it may be too late.

Planning for the Hereafter needs to be start in the Now –  with right intention,  sincere devotion and regular action. Else it could be too late.

Plan for heaven on earth. And life after death.

Please note, I, Dr. Prerna Kohli, haven’t written this article. I am sharing this article, as received via WhatsApp, unfortunately I don’t know who the author is, as I would have liked to give them credit for such a beautiful essay.

What is self harm in teenagers?
Self harm Counseling with Dr Prerna Kohli, India's Leading Psychologist
Self harm Counseling for teenagers with Dr Prerna Kohli, India’s Leading Psychologist

Cutting, is also know as self harm, or self injury, it is an intentional injury to oneself without the intention of suicide. The most common type of self harm is cutting of arms with sharp blades, knife or other instruments.  Other types of self harm are burning oneself (typically with cigarette butts), banging the head against a wall, interfering with the healing of a wound, pulling out of hair, or eating non edible items such as sharp objects, or poisonous items.

Traditional self-harm behaviour doesn’t consider taking drugs or eating disorders.

The desire to self-harm is a symptom of borderline personality disorder.

However, patients with other mental disorders may also self-harm, including those with depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and several personality disorders.

Traditionally self-harm is seen in youngsters, and it starts by the age of 12 years and generally tapers off by the age of 24 years, therefore it is generally associated with teenagers. Older people (upto 45-50 years) also show this behaviour.

Girls show self-harming behaviour more than boys. It and can be easily hidden by wearing long sleeve shirts, or pants, as generally the cuts are made on the arms and legs.

Thus, many times children who self-harm are “normal” kids who are experimenting as others experiment with smoking, drinking and alcohol. Cutting is not normal behaviour and parents need to be vigilant.
